Where to Stay on Your Trip to Oahu: A Guide to Enjoying the island of Oahu

If you’re planning a trip to Oahu, I highly recommend splitting your stay between two different areas. This approach gives you the chance to explore the island’s diverse landscapes and vibes while avoiding long drives to key attractions. My personal favorites? Waikiki combined with either the North Shore or Ko’olina.
Waikiki: The Heart of Honolulu
Waikiki is where the island’s vibrant energy comes to life. A nice family friendly location is the Hilton Hawaiian Village, a luxury resort with beachside access and an awesome pool and lagoon perfect for the whole family. With its prime location in Honolulu, Waikiki offers the perfect blend of city excitement and beachfront relaxation.
You’ll be surrounded by world-class shopping, restaurants, and cultural attractions, like the Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium. From here, it’s an easy drive to visit Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden, snorkel at Hanauma Bay, or head over to the serene beaches of the windward side like Kailua Beach.
Photography Tip: Waikiki beach makes a great backdrop for family photos. Whether it’s a stroll along the beach or capturing the kids building sandcastles, the early morning or late afternoon golden hours provide stunning lighting. Keep in mind, I only photograph at Waikiki beach in the morning due to low crowds and the best direction of light.
Ko’olina: Secluded Serenity with a Splash of Disney Magic
If your family is looking for a more laid-back, yet luxurious retreat, consider staying in Ko’olina. The Aulani Disney Resort (among others including the Four Seasons Koolina and The Marriott at Koolina) offers a magical blend of relaxation and entertainment, perfect for Disney fans and families alike.
This area has a peaceful, serene vibe, reminiscent of Maui’s slower pace, which many of my clients have loved. Ko Olina’s private lagoons provide the perfect setting to relax poolside or take a gentle swim, making it a kid-friendly spot too! If you’re aiming for a relaxing getaway filled with pool time, Ko Olina is ideal.
Photography Tip: The sunsets at Ko Olina are absolutely breathtaking. If you’re planning a family photoshoot, this is the perfect place to capture a sunset session with the stunning ocean backdrop.
North Shore: Rugged Beauty at Turtle Bay
For those craving a more rugged, natural Hawaiian experience, The Ritz-Carlton at Turtle Bay on the North Shore is the place to be. The newly branded Ritz-Carlton property offers elevated luxury amidst Oahu’s iconic surf breaks and scenic coastline.
I recently stayed here with my family and loved every moment of it. Turtle Bay provides easy access to famous beaches like Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay, but the resort itself is so stunning that you might not want to leave. The slower pace and scenic beauty of the North Shore make it the perfect place to relax and reconnect with nature.
Photography Tip: Turtle Bay is a stunning backdrop for capturing family memories. The vast coastline and rugged landscapes provide endless opportunities for both candid and posed shots, especially during golden hour when the light is soft and dreamy.
Each of these locations offers its own unique appeal and activities, so splitting your time between two of these locations ensures you get the best of both worlds. From Waikiki’s bustling energy to the tranquil vibes of Ko Olina and the raw beauty of the North Shore. Oahu is so beautiful, your family will create unforgettable memories wherever you choose to stay.
