7 Tips for a Smooth Family Photo Session | Waikiki Portrait Photographer
Planning family photos during your Hawaii vacation should feel exciting—not stressful. One of the questions I hear most often is, “How can we make sure our family photos turn out well?”
After photographing hundreds of families on Oahu over the past 9.5 years, I’ve learned that beautiful photographs have much less to do with perfect poses and much more to do with preparation, realistic expectations, and simply enjoying time together.
Here are a few of my favorite tips to help your family have a relaxed and enjoyable experience.
1. Choose the Right Time of Day
Lighting plays one of the biggest roles in how your photographs look.
That’s why I photograph almost exclusively during sunrise or the last hour-1.5hrs before sunset when the light is soft and flattering.
The exact start time depends on the location, the season, and how the sun interacts with each beach. Some locations photograph best just before sunrise, while others have beautiful light a little later into the morning.
You don’t have to figure that out—that’s my job. I’ll recommend the best start time based on the beach we choose.
2. Let Me Help You Choose the Best Beach
One of the biggest misconceptions is that every beach photographs the same.
They don’t.
Some beaches are better for sunrise, while others work beautifully at sunset. Some have palm trees, others have dramatic mountains, and some are ideal for toddlers because they’re easier to access.
Rather than asking you to choose from dozens of beaches, I’ll recommend locations based on:
- Where you’re staying
- The ages of your children
- The time of year
- The look you’re hoping to achieve
- If your family has special needs
- Current beach conditions
Consider your familys needs as well as what background you prefer when selecting a spot. Some locations are recommended for large extended families, a later start time, a beach with easier access for a wheelchair, a secluded beach with palm trees, etc. Let Marissa know your needs and she will help you find the best photo session location for your family/loved ones.
Keep in mind, Marissa is based on Oahu however she is familiar with beaches on Maui as well and is able to travel based on availability.
3. Coordinate Your Outfits Instead of Matching
One of the easiest ways to create timeless photographs is by choosing outfits that coordinate instead of everyone wearing the exact same color.
Soft neutrals, muted earth tones, light blues, and gentle pastels photograph beautifully against Oahu’s beaches.
I also recommend avoiding large logos, bright neon colors, and busy patterns that can distract from your family’s connection.
Every family receives my Style + Vendor Guide after booking, making outfit planning much easier.
4. Don’t Stress if Your Kids Aren’t “Perfect”
This is probably the most important advice I can give.
Children don’t need to sit still and smile perfectly for every photograph.
Some of my favorite images happen when kids are exploring, laughing, cuddling with mom or dad, or simply being themselves.
Rather than expecting perfection, focus on enjoying time together. I’ll gently guide your family while allowing plenty of room for natural moments to unfold.
5. Keep Expectations Simple
You don’t need to spend your entire vacation worrying about family photos.
My goal is to make the process feel easy.
After booking, I’ll help with:
- Choosing the best location
- Recommending the ideal time
- Outfit planning
- Preparing for your session
- Answering questions along the way
By the time your session arrives, you’ll know exactly where to meet and what to expect.
6. Trust the Process
Many families tell me afterward that they were worried their children wouldn’t cooperate.
Almost every time, those same families are amazed by how many beautiful moments we captured.
Children don’t have to look at the camera every second.
Some of the most meaningful photographs are the ones where your family is interacting naturally, walking together, or simply enjoying the beach.
7. Remember Why You’re Taking These Photos
Years from now, your children won’t remember whether their shirt wrinkled or whether their hair was absolutely perfect.
They’ll remember the feeling of holding your hand, playing in the sand, laughing together, and spending time as a family in Hawaii.
Those are the memories I hope to preserve every time I pick up my camera.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my child doesn’t cooperate?
That’s completely normal. I photograph children at their own pace and gently guide the session without forcing smiles or stiff poses.
Will you help us choose a location?
Absolutely. I’ll recommend the best beach based on where you’re staying, the season, and the style of photographs you’d like.
What should we wear?
Every booking includes my Style + Vendor Guide with outfit inspiration, color palettes, and recommendations from trusted local businesses.
What happens if the weather changes?
If weather or ocean conditions aren’t ideal, I’ll recommend the best option available. Sometimes that means adjusting the location to ensure we create the best possible photographs.
