What Is a Mini Session?

A mini session is a shorter, simplified version of a full photography session. It’s designed for families, couples, and expecting parents who want beautiful photos but don’t need a full-length session. Keep in mind, this photo session is typically done back to back with another client, so you might have either the 1st 2nd or 3rd timeslot. Additionally, it is done in Waikiki or Koolina. If you are the only client of the day, the Kahala location might be an option. Please be sure to check in with Marissa.

Mini Session Highlights:

✅ Short & Sweet: Lasts around 20 minutes making it ideal if you want to try out a new photographer, or if you’re looking for a shorter photo session focusing on portraits at a convenient location in Waikiki or Koolina.

✅ Budget-Friendly: A great option for those who want professional photos without the higher cost of a full session. Though, keep in mind a longer session can sometimes be a better option for different reasons.

Possible Locations for Mini Sessions on Oahu

Oahu is filled with breathtaking photo spots, perfect for capturing your family or maternity session. Here are some top locations:

1. Waikiki Beach

Waikiki is one of my favorite spots for an Oahu mini session — especially for families staying nearby. Here’s an honest look at what makes this Waikiki mini session location special, and what to keep in mind when we plan yours.

Why families love it:

  • Iconic scenery — Diamond Head in the background, swaying palm trees, and gorgeous sunrise colors reflecting on the ocean
  • Beautiful sunrise light — a soft mix of golden and even light that’s so flattering for families
  • Perfect for large, extended-family sessions — there’s room to spread out
  • Accessible for everyone — this is a wonderful location for clients who use a wheelchair or have difficulty walking. I’ve photographed several sessions here with clients using wheelchairs, and it works beautifully
  • Easy parking — one less thing to stress about on the morning of your session
  • Super convenient if you’re staying nearby — it’s a short distance from the Hilton Hawaiian Village, the Ilikai Hotel, and the Hale Koa Hotel
  • Calmer, sunnier conditions — the hotels block a lot of the wind, so it’s usually less breezy here, and the weather tends to be sunnier than other parts of Oahu

A few honest things to know:

  • There are some distracting objects around this beach, so photos here take extra retouching — but don’t worry, I shoot from specific angles that keep them out of frame. If its not avoidable, I recommend selecting those photos for retouching
  • Waikiki gets busy after sunrise, so timing is everything for your mini session. Starting too late (a few hours after sunrise) means bigger crowds, more distractions, harsher sun, and squinting — none of which we want. Following my recommended start time is the secret to those clean, peaceful shots and of course a Stress-free photo session which is what we are always aiming for!
  • There are several angles here that photograph beautifully — though a few other Oahu locations nearby are even more scenic, which we can talk through when planning your session

2. Kahala Beach

A true hidden gem — a beautiful mix of palm trees, soft sand, and ocean views that makes for a more private, tucked-away Oahu mini session.

Why families love it:

  • Fewer crowds than Marissas Waikiki Beach photo location — social media has made this spot a little more popular – it happens – , but you can still find it nearly empty most mornings
  • Close to Waikiki — just 12-15 minutes from Waikiki depending on which side you are staying
  • Flexible for most family sizes — it works for both small and large families, though it photographs best with smaller groups of seven or fewer, I have done large groups at this location. If you are unable to walk a far distance on sand it could be challenging to reach the location, but I have worked around this situation in the past with extended families.

A few honest things to know:

  • Parking can be tricky — it’s tough at sunset, and at sunrise the lot sometimes hasn’t opened yet by the time we need to meet. Not to worry: I have a workaround for this, so just look to me for guidance on where to go
  • There’s a short walk involved — about three minutes down the beach path to reach the spot
  • This is one to trust the process on: when you first arrive, it won’t look quite like the dreamy photos in my portfolio. That’s normal! The magic comes through in how I frame and capture it
  • There are some buildings in the background — but don’t worry, you won’t see them in your final images. I shoot around them

4. Ko Olina (Near Aulani) 🌺

  • A convenient location for those staying at Aulani Resort, The Four Seasons, or Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club.
  • There are a few coves nearby where professional photographers are able to get a permit. These locations have palm trees, rocks and a beautiful ocean. The best time for photos here is at sunrise to avoid crowds

What to Wear for Your Waikiki Mini Session

For Families:

👗 Moms & Daughters: Flowy dresses or skirts in neutral or pastel tones. Avoid loud patterns for a timeless look.
👕 Dads & Sons: Linen shirts or polos with khaki or light-colored shorts.

For Expecting Couples:

🤍 Mom-to-Be: A long, elegant maternity dress that flows in the breeze. Soft, neutral, or earthy tones look best against the sand and ocean.
🖤 Partners: A linen or cotton button-down with neutral shorts or pants for a classic island look.

Pro Tip: Barefoot always looks great on the beach, and adding a flower crown or fresh lei po’o can elevate your look!

Waikiki Mini Session

FAQs

How long is a mini session?
Mini sessions typically last 20 minutes, perfect for older kids, kids who have done a photo session before, 1 child under 4, 2 kids 5+ yrs old, couples photos, or a short and sweet maternity session.

How many photos do we get?
This varies so please reach out to Marissa at marissa.hbphoto@gmail.com

What if my child doesn’t cooperate?
Mini sessions are designed to be fast and fun. However, if you have 2 kids under 4, or if both of your kids need extra time, please book a larger package.

Marissa uses her experience working with kids to distract, focus on nature, play games, etc to bring out genuine smiles. Marissa does her best to embrace the chaos and energy of little ones. This works best if you have just 1 child to focus on. If you have 2 children with a lot of energy, I definitely recommend a larger package.

Can we bring props?
Absolutely! Feel free to bring flower crowns (lei po’o), baby ultrasound photos, or a special blanket to personalize your session.

What happens if it rains?
Oahu can sometimes get passing showers which are not predictable- I always carry a few umbrellas until it passes! If necessary, we’ll reschedule your session or adjust locations. Koolina and Waikiki are typically more dry and not very windy in comparison to other locations.
