Family walking at diamond head beach

Want family photos with a more secluded backdrop than Waikiki — without driving more than a few minutes past it? Tucked below the sea cliffs on the ocean side of Diamond Head is a narrower, beautiful stretch of beach that most visitors drive right past. I’m Marissa, a Native Hawaiian photographer born and raised on Oahu, and this is one of my favorite spots for families who want their photos to feel a little more adventurous. This gallery is from a recent session there.

Why this beach photographs like nowhere else near Waikiki

  • Sea cliffs instead of hotel towers — the beach sits directly below Diamond Head’s slopes, so your backdrop is rugged coastline and open Pacific rather than resort skyline
  • Far fewer people — reaching the sand takes a short walk down a paved trail from the lookouts, and that little bit of effort filters out the crowds
  • The Diamond Head Lighthouse — the historic 1899 lighthouse sits right beside the trail, a backdrop you can’t get at any other Oahu beach
  • Surf culture in the background — the offshore reef breaks draw surfers and windsurfers, adding living, moving Hawaii to wide shots

Honest things to know before choosing this location

I recommend this spot often — but it’s not for every crew, and I’d rather tell you now than surprise you at 6 AM:

  • There’s a real (short) walk. Access is a paved trail down from the parking areas along Diamond Head Road — easy for most, but it’s downhill on the way in and uphill with sandy kids on the way out. Wear real footwear for the walk; barefoot starts at the bottom.
  • Best for families with older kids, teens, and couples. For toddlers who need carrying or grandparents with mobility concerns, I’ll usually steer you toward Waikiki instead as it is more accessible.
  • The beach is narrow. That’s part of its drama — cliffs close behind, sand colored rock, & ocean right there with waves that surfers love
  • Parking is limited. A few pullout lots along Diamond Head Road that surfers fill early — one more reason the early session time works in our favor.

How a session here works

  1. Inquire with your travel dates and mention you love the Diamond Head look — I’ll confirm it suits your group.
  2. We time it for the best light and lowest crowds — golden hour, when the cliffs glow and the trail is quiet. This session was actually done 45 minutes after sunrise – so a little later but we did have some cloud coverage helping us.
  3. We meet at the lookout parking on Diamond Head Road and walk down together — I’ll have exact pins and timing for you after booking
  4. We shoot the drama — cliffs, big ocean — and you’re back up the trail with the whole day ahead

What should we wear here?

The same soft, coordinating palette that works across Oahu — off white, creams, sage, light blue — pops beautifully against the darker cliffs and reef. Flowing fabrics love the breeze along this coastline. Skip the long trains and delicate shoes; this location rewards outfits you can move in. Booked families get my full styling guide, and a lei po’o from a local lei maker is right at home against this backdrop.

Diamond Head beach session FAQs

Is this the same as hiking Diamond Head crater? No — the summit hike is a separate (and much longer) adventure inside the crater. Our session is at the beach below the ocean-side cliffs: a few minutes of paved path, not a two-hour hike.

Can we do a mini session here? Because of the walk, this is not possible — my mini sessions run in Waikiki and Ko Olina for convenience since mini sessions are typically done back to back with another client

We’re staying in Waikiki — how far is it? Minutes. The lookouts are just past Kapiolani Park on Diamond Head Road.

What if someone in our group can’t do the trail? Tell me when you inquire — I know beautiful, zero-walk alternatives nearby, and matching families to the right beach is genuinely my favorite part of the job.

Ready for the dramatic side of the south shore?

If Waikiki feels a little too postcard and you want photos with the sandy cliff/rocks and bigger ocean this is your beach. Inquire here with your travel dates and group — I respond personally, usually within hours and always the same day.
