Family of 3 Beach Photoshoot | Ideas & Poses from Ko Olina, Hawaii

Planning a family of 3 beach photoshoot and wondering how to make the most of it? Here’s something I tell my three-person families all the time: small families make the sweetest sessions. Every frame is intimate, every pose is easy to arrange, and your child is never lost in a crowd of cousins — it’s just the three of you and the ocean. I’m Marissa, a Native Hawaiian family photographer on Oahu, and this post is built around a real session with a family of three at Ko Olina, so every idea below is one we actually photographed.
Why a family of three photographs so beautifully
With three people, we can move fast and play more — no herding, no rows of people to arrange, no one blinking in the back. That means more variety in less time: candid play, quiet snuggles, individual moments with each parent, and portraits of your child that deserve their own wall. If you’ve ever wondered whether a professional session is “worth it” for just the three of you — it’s the easiest yes I give.

Family of 3 beach photo ideas & poses (all from this real session)
1. The shoreline walk. Child in the middle, one hand in each of yours, walking the water’s edge. The classic for a reason — it’s connection, motion, and location in one frame.
2. The swing. One-two-three-wheee. Genuine laughter every single time, and with only two adults and one kid, we can repeat it until the wave timing and the giggle line up perfectly.
3. Shoulder ride. Up on dad’s (or mom’s!) shoulders, everyone walking toward the light. Adds height, drama, and that end-of-a-perfect-beach-day feeling.
4. The parent sandwich. You two lean in, little one squished in the middle, kisses on both cheeks. The photo grandparents frame.
5. The twirl. One parent spins the kiddo while the other laughs in the background — movement makes small-family photos feel full of life.
6. The quiet cuddle. Sitting together on the sand, child in laps, watching the water. The frame that looks like how the trip felt.
7. Just play. Sand, splashing, chasing — I step back and shoot. With a family of three there’s room in every frame for all of it.
What should a family of 3 wear?
Here’s your unfair advantage over big families: coordinating three people is easy. Pick one soft palette — creams, sage, dusty blue, blush — put mom in the statement piece (a long, flowing dress moves beautifully in the Ko Olina breeze), and dress dad and kiddo in complementary solids. Booked families get my full styling guide with outfit links, and a lei po’o from a local lei maker is the finishing touch for mama.
Is it worth driving from Waikiki to Ko Olina for photos?
The family in this post did exactly that — stayed in Waikiki, made the roughly 40-minute morning drive west, and met me at Ko Olina for sunrise. My honest take as a local: Waikiki sunrise is wonderful and iconic — but if your family of three wants quieter sand and that resort-cove look, the drive to Ko Olina is one of the best trades on the island. And if you’d rather skip the drive, I photograph small families at Waikiki every week — we’ll pick what fits your crew when you inquire.
Do we need a long session for just 3 people?
Usually not — this is exactly what my mini sessions were made for. A family of three can get remarkable variety in a short sunrise session, which also happens to be the most toddler-stamina-friendly format there is. See how mini sessions work here, and I’ll recommend the right fit when you reach out. If you’re looking for a special session lets say for a birthday milestone then you could do a larger collection. Family of 3 beach photoshoot FAQs
Is a professional session really worth it for a small family? More than for anyone, honestly — small-family sessions produce the highest ratio of intimate, frame-worthy images, and they’re the photos you’ll wish you had at every stage your child outgrows.
What’s the best time of day? Sunrise: soft light, empty beaches, cool air, and a happy kiddo. Visiting from the mainland? Jet lag will have your family up early anyway — use it.
What if our little one won’t cooperate? Then we play instead of pose — that’s what half the ideas above really are. I’ve spent years photographing kids of every mood; wiggly is workable, and often the best frames come from it.
We’re expecting baby #2 — can this double as an announcement? One of my favorite things to photograph. Tell me when you inquire and we’ll plan a few frames just for the announcement — or see my [Oahu maternity sessions]if the bump deserves top billing.
