Oahu Proposal Photographer | Best Places to Propose in Hawaii
Planning a Proposal on Oʻahu? Here’s What to Know Before You Ask
Planning a proposal in Hawaiʻi is already unforgettable — but choosing the right location and timing can make the experience feel even more meaningful.
As an Oʻahu proposal photographer, I work with couples visiting from all over the world who want their proposal to feel intentional, beautiful, and personal without being overly complicated.

The location featured in the images throughout this blog post is China Walls on Oʻahu, one of the island’s most dramatic oceanfront proposal locations.
This couple traveled to Hawaiʻi from Los Angeles for a surprise proposal and couples photoshoot. His parents were also part of the plan, and his now fiancée was the only person who had no idea the proposal was happening.
We arrived about 20 minutes before sunset on a partly cloudy evening. Even though it was already getting fairly dark and the area was extremely crowded—with people frequently walking through the background during the proposal—we were still able to capture some beautiful moments together.
China Walls is known for its stunning lava rock cliffs, expansive ocean views, and golden sunset light, which can make it an incredible location for couples looking for a more adventurous setting on Oʻahu.
However, it’s important to know that this location can also be dangerous depending on ocean conditions. Large waves often break close to the cliffs, and if someone were to fall into the water, it can be very difficult to safely climb back up. Because of this, China Walls is not necessarily at the top of my personal recommendation list for proposals, especially for couples looking for a quieter or more relaxed experience.
That said, if you love dramatic scenery and are comfortable navigating rocky terrain carefully and safely, it can be an incredibly beautiful place to propose on Oʻahu.
If you’re thinking about proposing during your trip to Hawaiʻi, here are a few things to consider before choosing the perfect location.

Why Oʻahu Is One of the Best Places to Propose
Oʻahu offers an incredible mix of scenery within short driving distances:
- Dramatic cliffs
- Quiet sunrise beaches
- Beautiful beaches with palm trees, mountains, etc.
Whether you want something adventurous, relaxed, or elegant, there’s a location that fits your vision.
For many couples, proposing during a Hawaiʻi vacation also removes some of the pressure. You’re already disconnected from everyday routines and focused on spending quality time together.

Proposal Locations on Oʻahu That Each Offer a Different Experience
One of the best things about planning a proposal on Oʻahu is that every part of the island has a completely different feel. Whether you’re envisioning dramatic cliffs, soft sunrise beaches, tropical mountains, or resort-style scenery, there’s a location that fits the kind of experience you want to create.
China Walls
China Walls offers a dramatic lava rock coastline, expansive ocean views, crashing waves, and beautiful golden sunset light.
Con: This spot can become very crowded near sunset and can also be dangerous depending on ocean conditions and where you’re standing near the cliffs.
For couples who love adventure and scenery that feels cinematic, China Walls can be an incredible proposal location.

Lanikai Beach
Lanikai feels softer, calmer, and more romantic. Known for its turquoise water and iconic offshore islands, it’s one of the most beautiful sunrise locations on Oʻahu.
Best for: couples wanting a peaceful, elegant beach proposal with a dreamy Hawaiʻi feel, mokulua islands in the background, some palm trees
Con: Best at sunrise, smaller stretch of sand in comparison to other beaches
Ko’Olina
Ko’Olina offers a beautiful cove, rocks, palm trees, ocean and easy accessibility.
Best for: sunrise photos when it is quiet, couples staying at nearby resorts who want a relaxed and convenient proposal location. Stay at the Four Seasons and meet right in front of your hotel for extreme convenience
Con: very crowded at sunset
Waikīkī
Waikīkī combines city energy with ocean views, luxury hotels, and convenience. Sunrise sessions here can actually feel surprisingly peaceful before the crowds arrive.
Best for: couples staying in waikiki who want iconic Hawaiʻi scenery with Diamond head in the background, palm trees, and a beautiful ocean with sunrise colors – easy access from their hotel. Very easy parking in the morning!
Con: Crowds increase quickly very shortly after sunrise
Kualoa Regional Park
Kualoa combines mountain views with the ocean, creating one of the most dramatic landscapes on Oʻahu.
Best for: couples wanting a proposal that feels distinctly Hawaiʻi with both Koolau mountains or the ocean in the background with chinamans hat island in the ocean.
Con: Weather on the windward side can change quickly and occasional rain showers are common, so be prepared.
Laʻie Beach
Laʻie offers a quieter, more local feel compared to some of the more tourist-heavy areas on Oʻahu. The beaches on this side of the island are known for soft morning light, fewer crowds, and beautiful stretches of coastline with a relaxed atmosphere.
Best for: couples staying at the Ritz Carlton Turtle Bay Resort; couples wanting a peaceful beach proposal that feels natural, intimate, and less busy than Waikīkī or the South Shore. Rocky cliffs, shore break, large stretch of sand, mountains in the background
Con: This area is farther from Honolulu and Waikīkī, so it’s best for couples already planning to spend time on the North Shore or East side of the island. Wind and ocean conditions can also vary depending on the season. It can be windy here and chances of rain are a little higher as well depending on the day due to its location.
Every proposal location on Oʻahu has a different atmosphere, which is why I always recommend choosing a place that reflects your personalities and the kind of experience you want to remember years from now.
Should You Hire an Oʻahu Proposal Photographer?
My answer is always yes — but not just for the photos.
A proposal photographer can also help with:
- choosing the best time of day – sunrise or sunset
- planning where to stand
- avoiding crowds
- coordinating timing discreetly
- helping the moment feel natural
Most people have never planned a proposal before, and having someone local involved can make the experience much smoother.

Sunrise or Sunset for a Proposal on Oʻahu?
Sunrise will be the best time in terms of lighting on the south and east shores. It is harder to get to locations with a direct sunset due to traffic if you are coming from Honolulu. Sunrise is the easiest time for most couples and you can also use jet lag to your advantage.
The best option really depends on the location and the kind of experience you want. Reach out and Marissa will assist you!

Tips for Planning a Surprise Proposal in Hawaiʻi
1️⃣ Keep the plan simple
The more complicated the setup, the more stressful it tends to become.
2️⃣ Choose a meaningful location
Think about your personalities as a couple. Do you love adventure? Quiet beaches? Luxury resorts? Scenic hikes?
3️⃣ Plan around lighting
Lighting changes everything in photos. Sunrise and sunset are almost always the best choices – golden hour.
4️⃣ Don’t overpack the day
Many couples try to squeeze a proposal after multiple activities. Slowing down and giving yourselves space to enjoy the moment makes a huge difference. Plan on doing your proposal on your 2nd or 3rd day that you arrive so that you can use jet lag to your advantage and you won’t be sunburned yet!

What Happens After the Proposal?
Many couples choose to turn the proposal into a full couples session afterward — which is honestly one of my favorite approaches.
Once the nerves are gone, you get:
- genuine excitement
- relaxed moments together
- beautiful vacation memories beyond just the proposal itself
And because you’re already dressed up and in a beautiful location, it flows naturally.
