Hilton Hawaiian Village Family Photographer | Waikiki Photo Session
Staying at Hilton Hawaiian Village and wondering how family photos work during your trip? Easy answer: beautifully, and closer than you think. I’m Marissa, a Native Hawaiian family photographer raised on Oahu, and I regularly photograph families right on the sand fronting the Village — which means your session starts a barefoot walk from your tower, at sunrise, before the beach wakes up. No taxis, no wrangling kids into car seats, no schlepping across the island. This gallery is from a recent session there.

Why the beach at Hilton Hawaiian Village photographs so well
- Duke Kahanamoku Beach — the soft white-sand stretch fronting the resort is consistently one of Waikiki’s most beautiful sections, with palm trees, gentle water, and Diamond Head down the coastline
- Calm, protected water — the lagoon-side areas are sheltered and family-friendly, which means relaxed toddlers instead of wave-dodging toddlers
- Iconic backdrops — yes, we can absolutely get the Rainbow Tower in your photos. Fun fact for your kids: its ceramic mosaic murals are listed by Guinness as the largest in the world, made from over 8,000 tiles each
- Golden sunrise light — the beach faces so that early morning light is soft and dreamy – yes there are some people around, but it is not as many people as there will be at sunset! The direction of light is my favorite at sunrise!
How a session works when you’re staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki
- You inquire with your travel dates and mention you’re staying at Hilton Hawaiian Village — inquiry form here
- We schedule for sunrise — typically a 6-7:30 AM start depending on the time of year. With mainland jet lag, your family will be wide awake anyway; use it!
- We meet on the sand near your resort — exact meeting spot shared after booking, an easy walk from any tower
- You’re back by breakfast — most families are eating banana pancakes by 8 AM while everyone else is just waking up, with the whole vacation day still ahead

What should we wear?
Soft, coordinating colors — muted colors like the outfits this family is wearing works well, you could do green since there isn’t too much green at this spot- also, creams, light blues, muted pink — anything that is similar to sunrise colors works really well. Jewel tones, bold dark patterns, is not recommended for the beaches of Hawaii – maroon, navy blue (unless paired with other blues and neutrals), contrasts with sunrise colors, so I don’t typically recommend this. However, I always tell clients that these are your photos so please wear what you feel comfortable wearing!
After booking you’ll get my full styling guide with outfit links, and if you want the ultimate Hawaii touch, a fresh lei po’o from a local lei maker elevates everything (and tames beach breeze hair).
Hilton Hawaiian Village photo session FAQs
Do we need to leave the resort area for our photos? No — sessions happen right on the public beach fronting the Village. If your family wants variety, iconic central Waikiki with Diamond Head views is minutes away, and I’ll recommend what fits your collection and crew.
Is sunrise the best time? Yes, it is the best time! The light is beautiful this time of day and I love the backgrounds that I am able to capture. Every photographer will think differently, but this is the light and angles that I prefer for my style!
We’re a big group — grandparents and cousins came too. Can everyone be in the photos? Absolutely! This spot is really great for extended families. I’ve photographed extended family groups up to 30.
Are you affiliated with the resort? I’m an independent local photographer — which means you’re booking a Native Hawaiian artist who photographs all over the island, and your session happens on the public beach fronting your resort.
