If you’re staying at Disney’s Aulani Resort, the Marriott Ko’olina Beach Club, or the Four Seasons Ko’olina and wondering whether to book a family photo session during your trip — the answer is yes, and here’s exactly why Ko’olina is one of my favorite spots to photograph on all of Oahu.

Meet Megan and her family! They were visiting from the mainland and staying at Aulani, and we captured this beautiful sunrise session steps from the resort. I love how their outfit colors played off the soft morning light — these are the kinds of images that end up framed on the wall.

Why Ko’olina is a Dream Location for Family Photos on Oahu

Ko’olina sits on the west side of Oahu, and for photography purposes, it has some real advantages over other beaches on the island.

It’s one of the driest spots on Oahu. If you’ve ever worried about rain ruining your session, Ko’olina is usually your best bet. The west side receives significantly less rainfall than the windward and north sides of the island.

Minimal wind, even on breezy days. There are specific spots near Ko’olina that stay sheltered even when the rest of the island is dealing with trade winds. Flyaway hair is cute in small doses — not for an entire session.

It’s steps from your resort. If you’re staying at Aulani, the Marriott, or the Four Seasons, you don’t even need to get in a car. That means less logistics, less stress, and more time being present with your family.

Mornings are perfect there.  If you’re on vacation like most of my clients you’ll likely be up early since Hawaii is 3+hrs behind the rest of the US

When to Schedule Your Ko’olina Photo Session

I almost always recommend sunrise for Ko’olina, and here’s why: the light is soft, the lagoons are still, and you’ll have the beach essentially to yourselves before the resort crowds arrive.

By mid-morning Ko’olina gets busy quickly — families heading to the pools, resort guests staking out beach chairs, and tour groups arriving. Sunrise (typically between 7–830am depending on the time of year) gives us clean backgrounds, gorgeous warm light, and a relaxed pace without a large amount of people fighting for a spot for photos.

The good news if you’re traveling from the mainland: Hawaii is 2–3 hours behind the West Coast and 5–6 hours behind the East Coast. Your body will likely be waking up early anyway — we might as well make the most of it with photos you’ll love forever.

Sunrise tip from Marissa: I do not recommend Ko’olina for sunset sessions. The cove location gets crowded quickly in the late afternoon, and you can end up waiting your turn. All the Ko’olina photos in my portfolio are shot at sunrise — that’s how much I believe in it for this location.

What to Expect at Your Ko’olina Session

Getting there: If you’re staying at Aulani or the Marriott, I’ll meet you right at the resort — no car needed – you can walk from the marriott or drive. If you need to drive, parking near the lagoons is available and usually free and easy at sunrise.

Footwear: Please skip the heeled sandals or platform shoes. There’s a short rocky section to walk over near some of the lagoon access points, and heels make it genuinely tricky. Flat sandals, bare feet, or sneakers are perfect.

Kids: Ko’olina is genuinely one of the most kid-friendly photo locations on Oahu. While the ocean can have big waves at times, the beach and rocks along the shoreline act as a natural barrier — so where we shoot is calm and sheltered. Some of my favorite images from Ko’olina sessions are the in-between moments — piggyback rides along the shoreline, parents swinging kids by their hands, little ones toddling ahead while mom and dad follow laughing. That’s where the magic happens.

How long does a session take? I offer both mini sessions (about 20 minutes) and full sessions (35+ minutes) at Ko’olina. Mini sessions are perfect for couples, small families, or if you want something short and sweet. Full sessions are better if you have multiple kids, a larger group, or want more variety in your images. Times may vary so please reach out to Marissa for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions — Ko’olina Family Photography

Can you photograph inside Aulani Disney Resort? The resort grounds and pools are private property, so photos inside the resort itself require their own permits. My Ko’olina sessions take place on the beach at the nearby coves, which are public beach access areas. The backdrop is absolutely stunning and guests staying at Aulani are just a 5 min walk.

Is Ko’olina good for extended family photos? Yes! The cove has spots for us to do extended family photos in the morning. I recommend sunrise for extended families because the cove is small and it is crowded at sunset.

How far is Ko’olina from Waikiki? Ko’olina is on the west side of Oahu, about 45+ minutes from Waikiki depending on traffic. If you’re staying in Waikiki, the drive is very doable — especially at sunrise when traffic is light going west. Alternatively, Waikiki photo sessions are also available if you are in Waikiki and would prefer to stay close to your hotel.

What should we wear? Soft neutrals, pastels, and muted tones photograph beautifully against Ko’olina’s palm trees, rocks, water and white sand. I have a full outfit guide here with color palettes, shopping recommendations, and tips for coordinating your family’s looks.
