If you’ve been researching family photographers on Oahu, you’ve probably noticed that many recommend sunrise sessions. One of the questions I hear most often is:

“Do we have to meet the exact minute the sun comes up?”

The answer is…not always…it depends on the location.

Most of my sunrise sessions begin during golden hour, but the exact start time depends on the location we’re photographing at, the position of the sun, the amount of natural shade available, and the weather conditions that morning.

In other words, I don’t simply look at the sunrise time and tell every family to meet at the exact same time for all locations. Every beach is different, and my goal is to choose the time that gives your family the most beautiful light – this means our meeting time might shift on the day of your photo session. Typically we will push back the time for sunrise, and move up the time for sunset if we need more light.

Every Beach Photographs Differently

One of the biggest advantages of working with a full-time Oahu family photographer is that they understand how different beaches photograph at different times of the year because we are at the locations that we photograph at regularly.

Some beaches face directly toward the sunrise. At those locations, we’ll often meet about five minutes before sunrise so we can begin photographing as soon as there’s enough natural light.

Other beaches photograph beautifully a little later in the morning because the surrounding landscape creates softer light or more natural shade.

There isn’t one “perfect” sunrise time that works for every beach on Oahu.

Instead, I consider:

  • The direction the beach faces
  • Where the sun will be during your session
  • Natural shade
  • Cloud coverage
  • Recent weather
  • The overall look we’re hoping to achieve
  • When the client is available to meet

A Real Example from a session at Diamond Head Beach

The family featured in this post was originally scheduled to photograph at a different beach down the road.

The morning of their session, I checked conditions and found that recent storms had turned the ocean water brown at our original location. Rather than photographing there, I suggested we move to Diamond Head Beach, where the water was likely going to be clearer.

By the time we parked, walked down to the beach, and got everyone settled, we didn’t begin photographing until about 45 minutes after sunrise during the month of May.

If you look through the gallery, you probably wouldn’t guess we started that late.

Although the sun was brighter than it would have been right at sunrise, we were still photographing during beautiful morning light. Diamond Head Beach worked especially well that morning because of the way the light was falling across the beach and we also had some clouds helping filter the light – so we did get lucky! So although this was not an ideal time that I would recommend to a client, it all ended up working in our favor.

We continued photographing on the beach for 40 minutes and created this gallery of photos for this repeat customer that my client was very pleased with.

When she saw her photos she texted me and said,

“I love the photos! I almost didn’t schedule a photo session but I am so glad I did!”

Why Flexibility Matters

This session is a perfect example of why it is important to remain flexible in the event that we do need to shift our start time. Usually my photo sessions run on time (plus or minus 10 minutes based on cloud coverage) & everything goes exactly as planned.

Other times, Mother Nature has different ideas and in that case, a positive attitude and flexibility with the location is important. I will do my best to provide you with the best location based on what mother nature has provided for the day.

Rather than forcing a session at a location that isn’t looking its best, I’d much rather recommend a different beach that will give your family a better experience and more beautiful photographs.

If we need to reschedule due to the weather, I would reach out to you and figure out the next best plan.

“As long as I have availability, I recommend selecting a date at the start of your trip vs. the end of your trip just in case we do have rainy weather and need to reschedule.”

It’s About the Light—Not the Clock

One of the biggest misconceptions about sunrise photography is that beautiful light disappears the moment the sun rises. Yes, it does get bright quickly, but it is not uncommon for there to be clouds filtering the sun especially on the east side of Oahu.

Depending on the beach, the sun position and the weather, we often have flexibility within the first hour of the morning for most locations and up to 2 hours for other locations with shade.

I recommend your session time based on the specific location—not simply the sunrise time listed on a weather app.

Planning Your Family Session

When you book with me, you don’t need to worry about researching beaches, checking sunrise charts, tides, or wondering which location photographs best at different times of year.

I’ll recommend:

  • The best beach locations based on where you’re staying (I’ll also ask how far you’re open to driving)
  • The ideal start time for your location of choice
  • Sunrise or sunset recommendations
  • Backup options if weather or ocean conditions change – I keep this to myself unless we need to reschedule as rescheduling is not as common as you would think

My goal is to make the planning process simple so that all you have to do is show up and enjoy spending time with your family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all sunrise sessions begin at the exact same time?

No. The ideal start time depends on the beach, the time of year/sun position, the direction the sun rises, available shade, and weather conditions. Some locations are best photographed just before sunrise, while others still have beautiful light 30–60 minutes afterward.

What happens if the weather changes?

If conditions at your planned location aren’t ideal—like brown water after a storm (rare!) an unexpected cold front or a longer passing shower —I may recommend moving to a nearby beach that will photograph better. My priority is always creating the best possible experience and images for your family. Please be open to rescheduling if needed.

Why do you usually recommend sunrise?

There are more sunrise locations that are easier to access for my clients vs. sunset locations (without fighting traffic). Sunrise offers soft, flattering light and generally quieter beaches. For families and couples on vacation, typically you will be jet lagged so getting up early is easy as well- especially for little ones! This is what makes sunrise easier for many of my clients.

Will you help us choose the best location?

Absolutely. Every family receives personalized location recommendations via email based on where you’re staying, the season, your family’s needs, and the style of photographs you’d like to create.
