1. Exploring Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden

Nestled on Oahu’s windward side, Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden is the perfect spot for nature lovers. With breathtaking mountain views and serene lakes, this lush garden offers a peaceful escape from the bustling city. Bring a picnic, take a leisurely walk through the diverse plant collections, or snap some family photos with the stunning Koʻolau Mountains as a backdrop.

Tip: Do not go when it is very rainy, or if it has been raining because it gets very slippery and muddy. Also, bring bug spray! and lots of it. The garden’s peaceful scenery, combined with Oahu’s iconic mountain range, makes it ideal for family portraits or couples’ shots. This spot opens late and closes early, so be prepared to make it a mid-day type of activity. There is also a beautiful pond with koi fish. Bring a blanket and lunch, its a great spot for a picnic!

2. Hiking the Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail

For families who enjoy hiking, the Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail offers an easy, paved path with rewarding views at the top. The 2-mile round-trip hike overlooks the turquoise waters of Oahu’s southeastern coast, where you can sometimes spot humpback whales during the winter months. It’s a fun and scenic hike suitable for all ages, making it perfect for families.

Tip: From November to May, you might spot humpback whales! Bring lots of water because this hike is not shaded. It is a paved road so you can bring a stroller. You might see people walking down to tide pools to swim, but it is not recommended as the ocean below the tidepools is not always very gentle.

3. Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay is one of Oahu’s most famous snorkeling spots, and for good reason. With crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life, it’s the perfect place for families to explore the underwater world. The bay is home to colorful fish, sea turtles, and vibrant coral reefs. It’s a great way to introduce kids to Hawaii’s marine ecosystems while enjoying a fun day at the beach. If you’re staying in Waikiki it is a convenient location to snorkel. If you’re on the North shore, check out Sharks Cove! Sharks cove is very kid friendly.
