What to Wear to Your Family Photo Session | Family Photographer Oahu
Happy New Year!! Are you looking for ideas on what to wear to your next family photo session? I love styling families! I’ve gotten a lot of practice over the last 4.5 years and believe it or not, you’ll probably like your photos more if you really take the time to piece together your outfits!
I link to think of outfits as the frosting on top of a cupcake. Your family and your connection with each other is the cupcake, the frosting is your outfits, and the weather + photographer are the wrapper that holds it all together. Everything comes together to create your family photos.

Here are 3 things you’ll want to think about when selecting your outfits.
1. STYLE
First you’ll want to select the style you’re going for. Are you wanting to do something boho, beachy, casual, dressy? Once you figure this out, you’ll want to be sure you keep everyone within the same style.
2. COLOR PALETTE
Next you’ll want to think about what color palette you want for your outfits. Are you going for earth tones, all white, blues, etc.
3. COORDINATE VS. MATCH
Next you’ll want to make sure you coordinate vs. match your outfits.
If you’d like to match it is ok! Sometimes families want to put their kids in the same matching outfit. I have also seen family’s do all white outfits which also works as well.
In the end it is your photoshoot, so you should wear something that you feel comfortable wearing! However, here is how I usually help families coordinate their outfits:
If outfit 1 is a pattern of cream, pink, and blue flowers, then outfit 2 might be a solid pink dress, outfit 3 might be a blue shirt with cream shorts, and outfit 4 might be a grey button down with khaki shorts.
Basically, the idea is you’re pulling colors from 1 outfit to use for the other outfits solid colors. This is where your color palette in step 2 is going to be important.
Also, keep in mind that light neutral colors go well with anything (grey, tan, beige, etc.) so use them as tops or bottoms as needed to make it all work well together!
