Waikīkī vs. Kahala Beach: Which is Best for Your Oʻahu Photo Session?

By Marissa HB Photography – Oʻahu Family & Maternity Photographer

If you’re planning a sunrise photo session on Oʻahu and are deciding between Waikīkī Beach and Kahala Beach, you’re in the right place. Both locations offer calm water, swaying palm trees, and a beautiful tropical vibe—but there are key differences that might make one more ideal than the other for your family, maternity, or couples photo session.

Here’s a side-by-side breakdown to help you decide which beach might be the better fit for your Oʻahu photography experience.

🌞 Sunrise Light & Ocean Views

Kahala Beach:

  • Direct sunrise views with soft, golden light from the moment your session begins.

  • Calm water and an open shoreline that allows us to take advantage of the early light.

  • Palm trees available to filter harsh light if needed later in the session.

  • Beautiful and quiet atmosphere, especially at sunrise.

Waikīkī Beach:

  • Indirect light at first, with the sun rising behind Diamond Head, giving us soft hues and reflections on the water—great for dreamy ocean color.

  • Once the sun rises higher, we can capture beautiful direct light, especially during a 60-minute session.

  • Offers iconic Diamond Head views, palm trees, and a vibrant city-beach backdrop.

🅿️ Parking & Convenience

  • Both locations have easy parking in the morning, especially if you arrive close to sunrise.

  • Waikīkī is the most convenient option if you’re staying at a Waikīkī hotel, with minimal travel time and familiar surroundings.

  • Kahala is just a 12–15 minute drive further south and offers a quieter, more secluded feel.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Crowd Levels & Timing Tips

  • Waikīkī becomes very crowded shortly after sunrise. That’s why I only offer sunrise sessions here—never at sunset. Between parking challenges, the direction of the sun, and heavy foot traffic, it’s not ideal for evening photos.

  • Morning sessions in Waikīkī are limited to within 1.5 hours after sunrise—after that, the lighting becomes harsh and the crowds increase significantly.

  • Kahala offers more flexibility in terms of session timing. While sunrise is still ideal, it’s possible to do a later morning or even a sunset session with beautiful results, thanks to the palm trees that provide shade and light diffusion. Sunset in Kahala also offers indirect light, giving a soft, warm feel.

🌴 Landscape & Backgrounds

  • Waikīkī features a mix of cityscape and beach: Diamond Head, high rises, and manicured walkways with palm trees.

  • Kahala offers a more natural look: fewer buildings due to the direction that I am shooting (there are still buildings behind me when I am shooting, but you will not see any in the images -if there are I WILL retouch them out), more open sand, palm trees, and a quieter luxury vibe.

📸 So, Which Beach Should You Choose?

If you’re staying in Waikīkī and want something simple and iconic, Waikīkī Beach might be perfect—especially for early risers or shorter sessions.
But if you’re looking for a little more flexibility, more direct light, and a quieter vibe, Kahala Beach is a top choice for family photos, maternity portraits, or couples sessions.

🏖 Final Thoughts from Your Oʻahu Photographer

Both locations are beautiful and offer different perks, and I’m happy to guide you through selecting the right one for your goals. My top tip? Book your session early in your trip and at sunrise for the best experience—calm light, fewer crowds, and cooler temps (especially for little ones!). Please keep in mind, editing and the look of the images will vary depending on the light on the day of your session and the specific spots used. Each photo session is always unique in its own way.
