Top 4 Tips for Preparing Your Family for a Photo Shoot in Honolulu | Lanikai Family Photographer
Getting ready for a family photo shoot in Honolulu? Let’s make it a stress-free and fun experience! From choosing the perfect location to preparing young children for the session, here are some essential tips to ensure your family pictures turn out beautifully.
1. Choosing the Perfect Location
Selecting the right location for your family photo shoot in Honolulu is easy with Marissa HB Photography, as I’ve included the best spots that I shoot at in my package guide. CLICK HERE to inquire.
Think about the time of day as well, with the golden hour before sunrise offering the perfect lighting for your photos, or an hour before sunset. Keep in mind, kids traveling from the continental US will be up very early as Hawaii is 2+ hrs behind the rest of the US, so sunrise is generally the best time for most families.
Opt for a location that is convenient, or just plain beautiful. You can also select a spot that holds special meaning to your family as it will add sentimental value to the photos. Whether it’s where you got married, engaged, or a favorite spot you like to visit while you’re on vacation on Oahu, choosing a meaningful location can make the experience even more memorable.
2. Selecting Coordinating Outfits
Coordinating outfits can elevate the overall look of your family photos. Opt for colors that complement each other and avoid busy patterns that might distract from the main focus – your family members. Consider a color palette that matches the location you’ve chosen. Sunrise/sunset sessions work well with colors that match the background such as blush, mauve, sage, cream, tan, etc. Stay away from very bright colors such as neon pink, as well as black as your main color. Bright colors can cast onto other family members clothes and face/body.
Ensure that everyone’s outfits are comfortable and reflect their personalities. You want your family to feel confident and relaxed during the photo shoot, and clothing plays a big role in setting the mood. Don’t forget to accessorize subtly – a statement necklace or a cute hat can add a touch of flair to the outfits.
3. Incorporating Props and Personal Items
Adding props and personal items to your family photo shoot can bring an extra layer of meaning to the pictures. Consider bringing along items that represent your family’s interests or hobbies – whether it’s a surfboard for a beach-loving family or a cake/stand for a one year milestone session.
Incorporating a lei po’o/flower crown (helps keep your hair back especially when its windy) and blanket (I typically always have a blanket and sand colored leather mat on hand) are great to have. Be creative with your choices, but remember not to overcrowd the scene – simplicity often leads to the most striking images.
4. Preparing Young Children for the Photo Session
Getting young children ready for a photo shoot can be a challenge, but with the right approach, it can turn into a fun experience for everyone. Start by explaining to them what to expect during the session and make it sound like an exciting adventure they get to be a part of.
Encourage your kids to be themselves and let their personalities shine through in the photos. Bring along their favorite toys or snacks (for after unless needed during your session) to keep them engaged and happy throughout the shoot. Remember, a relaxed and playful attitude from the parents can help set the tone for the entire session.
