1. Embrace Fall Colors

When selecting outfits for your Fall mini session, consider the rich and warm color palette that fall offers. Think dark grey, hunter green, sienna, nude brown, terracotta, etc. You also cant go wrong with cream or lighter earth tones, which works well with a lighter editing style. These colors not only complement the natural surroundings but also add warmth and depth to your photos for your fall family & couples photo session.

  • For Women: Opt for a cozy sweater dress paired with tights and boots. A long flowy skirt in a fall or festive hue paired with a fitted top or over sized sweater is also a great option.
  • For Men: Consider wearing a button-up shirt in a warm tone, layered with a cardigan or blazer. Denim or chinos in a light neutral color will keep the look polished and cohesive.
  • For Children: Dress the little ones in outfits that are both comfortable and stylish, such as knit sweaters, corduroy pants, or dresses with tights.

2. Coordinate, Don’t Match

While it’s important that your family’s outfits look cohesive, avoid the temptation to match exactly. Instead, aim for coordination by selecting a color scheme and choosing pieces that complement each other without being identical. This creates a more natural and visually appealing look for your bay area mini session.

  • Start with a Base Color: Choose one or two main colors that everyone’s outfits will revolve around, or a patterned outfit with various colors. Everyone else would then select a color from the pattern & find a solid colored outfit in that color, as shown in the example photos in this post.
  • Add Neutrals: Incorporate neutral tones like cream, gray, or brown to balance out the bolder colors. These neutrals can be used for accessories, such as scarves, hats as well. For shoes, find something neutral.San Jose Mini Session

3. Layer Up

Fall weather can be unpredictable, so layering is key. Layers not only add texture and interest to your photos but also keep you comfortable during your Bay Area mini session. This year I’ll be doing photos earlier in the fall, so you can probably get away with cooler clothes such as a short dress like the image above.

  • Scarves, Cardigans, and Vests: These are great layering pieces that can be easily added or removed depending on the temperature. They also add dimension and depth to your photos.
  • Jackets and Coats: Consider a stylish jacket or coat in a complementary color. For example, a wool peacoat in navy or a leather jacket in a rich brown can enhance your look while keeping you warm.
    • If it is not yet cold, a coat is not necessary, but a sweater might be nice to wear just for the photos especially if it is a short session and in the shade.

4. Textures and Patterns

Incorporating different textures and patterns into your outfits can add visual interest to your photos. However, it’s important to strike a balance to avoid clashing.

  • Textures: Think cable-knit sweaters, corduroy pants, suede boots, or a lace dress. These textures add richness and depth to your San Francisco mini session photos.
  • Patterns: If you want to include patterns, choose subtle ones like plaid, stripes, or florals in fall colors.

5. Footwear Matters

Your shoes will likely be visible in your photos, so choose footwear that is neutral in color and complements your outfits and suits the location of your San Jose mini session.

  • For Women: Boots are a fall staple, whether you opt for ankle boots, knee-highs, or even a stylish pair of heeled booties. If you are doing a beach mini session, opt for flats or you could also go barefoot (Hawaiian style).
  • For Men: Leather boots or classic loafers are great options. Avoid sneakers unless they’re particularly stylish and match the outfit.
  • For Children: Keep it comfortable with cute boots, shoes, or sandals that match their outfit.

6. Accessorize Thoughtfully

Accessories can add the finishing touch to your outfits, but be careful not to overdo it.

  • Hats: A stylish hat can be a great addition to a fall outfit, whether it’s a beret for your little girl or a classic beanie for men.
  • Scarves: Scarves are a versatile accessory that can add a pop of color or pattern to your outfit.
  • Jewelry: Simple, understated jewelry works best for photos. Avoid anything too flashy that might distract from the overall look.

7. Comfort is Key

While style is important, comfort should not be overlooked. Choose outfits that allow you to move freely and feel at ease during the session. This is especially important for children, who are likely to be more cooperative if they’re comfortable in what they’re wearing for your San Francisco Bay Area Mini Session.

8. Plan Ahead

Don’t wait until the last minute to decide what to wear. Lay out your outfits a few days before the session to make sure everything looks good together. This also gives you time to iron out any wrinkles, make last-minute adjustments, or pick up any missing items.
