Planning a first birthday trip to Hawaiʻi is such a special way to celebrate your baby’s first year. Traveling to Hawaii with a one-year-old to celebrate their big milestone can absolutely be magical — especially with a little thoughtful planning.

As an Oʻahu family photographer who works with visiting families every week, here’s what I would recommend if you’re planning a 7-night trip split between Maui and Oʻahu.

Should You Visit 2 islands?

If you’re traveling from the continental U.S., I recommend starting on the island where you plan to do the most activities if you’d like to visit 2 islands.

Because Hawaiʻi is 2+hrs behind the rest of the USA, your baby will likely wake up very early the first few days. That early wake-up window is actually perfect for:

  • Sightseeing

  • Beach mornings

  • Outdoor exploring

  • Sunrise family photos

If you plan to explore more in Oʻahu (Hanauma Bay, Lanikai Beach, North Shore, etc.), starting there makes sense. Save the more relaxed resort-style days for later in your trip once everyone adjusts to the time difference.

Suggested 7-Night Split: Maui + Oʻahu with a Baby

For a 7-night trip, a simple split works well:

Option 1 (Balanced):

  • 3 nights Oahu

  • 4 nights Maui

Option 2 (More Activity-Focused):

  • 5 nights Oahu

  • 2 nights Maui

Oʻahu offers more variety in beaches, activities, dining, and scenery within shorter driving distances — which can be helpful when traveling with a baby.

Maui feels more resort-centered and relaxed, especially in areas like Kāʻanapali or Wailea.

If your priority is exploration + first birthday photos, slightly more time on Oʻahu is ideal. Also, if you’re planning to do baby’s first birthday photos, I recommend doing it while you’re visiting O’ahu at the start of your trip.

Baby-Friendly Travel Tips for a 1-Year-Old on O’ahu

Traveling with a one-year-old is absolutely doable — it just requires flexibility.

Here are tips I share with visiting families:

Embrace Early Mornings

Jet lag works in your favor. Early mornings mean:

  • Empty beaches

  • Cooler temperatures

  • Happier babies

Keep Schedules Light

Plan only one main activity per day. Babies do best when the day isn’t rushed.

Choose Easy-Access Beaches

Look for:

  • Short walks from parking

  • Calm water

  • Minimal rocky terrain

  • Suggestions for O’ahu since I am based on O’ahu

    • Paradise cove at Ko’olina

    • The Hilton Hawaiian Lagoon

    • North Shore beaches in the morning

    • Magic Island in the morning (not on the weekend)

Pack Simple Celebration Decor

If you’re planning a small first birthday setup:

  • A neutral blanket

  • A simple cake – Tip: use instacart and amazon whole foods delivery while you’re on island!

  • A lightweight banner or #1 wooden sign for your cake

  • A favorite toy or fun sea shell from SOHA on Oahu

Minimal setups photograph beautifully in Hawaiʻi’s natural landscape.

Is It Worth Hiring an Oʻahu Family Photographer for a First Birthday?

Absolutely. A first birthday trip to Hawaiʻi is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone & a small tip- Staying in or near Waikiki will also allow you to have more sunrise beach options than staying at Koolina where traffic is heavy during the week in the mornings.

Hiring an experienced Oʻahu family photographer ensures:

  • You’re all in the photos together

  • The lighting is beautiful

  • The setting is thoughtfully chosen

  • The experience feels relaxed

One-year-olds change so quickly. Capturing this season in a place as meaningful as Hawaiʻi makes those images even more special over time.

If you’re specifically celebrating a milestone, working with an Oʻahu baby photographer who understands the rhythm of toddlers can make the experience smoother and more enjoyable.

Sunrise vs Sunset for Baby Photos on Oʻahu

For families with babies, sunrise almost always wins.

Why?

  • Less crowded beaches

  • Softer light

  • Cooler temperatures

  • Happier babies

Sunset sessions can be beautiful, but they’re often windier and busier.

Creating a Meaningful First Birthday in Hawaiʻi

The most memorable first birthday celebrations aren’t elaborate — they’re intentional.

Whether you choose a quiet beach morning, a simple cake smash in the sand, or a relaxed family walk at sunrise, Hawaiʻi naturally creates a beautiful backdrop for this milestone.
