What is Lifestyle Photography?

I wanted to take some time to talk about lifestyle photography as it is different from traditional or “posed” photography. I incorporate BOTH posed and lifestyle images into my photo sessions to be clear because I love both! However, I will provide more information about lifestyle photos and what it looks like.

Lifestyle photography captures genuine moments and emotions, preserving authentic memories for your family. Unlike posed photos, lifestyle or natural photography showcases your family’s true personalities and relationships, creating timeless images that you can cherish for years to come.

This style of photography focuses on capturing spontaneous expressions and interactions, allowing you to relive those special moments every time you look at the pictures. By opting for natural/lifestyle photography, you can create a collection of unique and heartfelt memories that truly reflect the beauty of your family bond.

Lighting Essentials for Capturing Genuine Moments

For capturing genuine moments in your family photo shoot, lighting is crucial and your professional photographer should know how to properly position you and your partner/family. Here are some key points about lighting:

  • Natural Light: Opt to shoot during golden hour, either early morning or late afternoon, for the softest and most flattering light.
    • Marissa HB Photography tip: This is the only time that I photograph clients. I recommend finding photos that you like in my portfolio, and then you can reach out and ask where those photos were taken to help you with deciding on the best location for you.
  • Avoid Harsh Shadows: Position your subjects so that strong overhead sunlight doesn’t create unflattering shadows on the faces.
  • Indoor Lighting: When shooting indoors, position your subjects near windows to utilize natural light or use soft artificial lighting for a flattering look.
    • Marissa HB Photography tip: I no longer photograph clients indoors since I focus on beach photo sessions in Hawaii, but I used to photograph newborns/families indoors.

Your photographer should have an idea of how to position you and your family, so if you are hiring a pro photographer, leave the lighting and positioning up to them.

Posing Tips for a Relaxed and Authentic Family Photo Shoot

To capture genuine and relaxed moments in your family photos, remember to keep it fun and natural.

Here are some simple posing tips to help you feel at ease during your family photo shoot:

  • Encourage interactions: Instead of stiff poses, focus on interacting naturally with your family members. Talk, laugh, and engage with each other to capture genuine emotions.
  • Capture movement: Don’t be afraid to move around during the photo shoot. Walking, playing, or gently swaying can add a dynamic touch to your photos.
  • Include different perspectives: Experiment with different angles and positions to create a variety of shots. Try sitting, standing, or even lying down for a diverse range of images.
  • Let your personalities shine: Embrace your individual personalities and quirks. Show your true selves and enjoy the moment together.
  • Relax and have fun: Remember, the best photos come from genuine moments of joy and connection. Relax, be yourself, and enjoy the experience with your loved ones.

Props and Accessories to Enhance the Natural Vibe

For a natural vibe in your family photo shoot, consider using props like blankets, baskets, or flowers. Accessories like hats, scarves, or jewelry can also add a touch of authenticity. Remember, the key is to keep it simple and let your family’s essence shine through.

Capturing Candid Moments: How to Encourage Natural Expressions

To capture natural expressions in photos with your family, focus on creating a relaxed atmosphere. Encourage genuine emotions by engaging in fun activities together before the shoot. Avoid posing too much; instead, let interactions flow naturally for authentic moments. Suggest activities like playing games, telling jokes, or simply enjoying each other’s company to bring out natural expressions. Remember, the key is to have a good time together so everyone feels comfortable and expresses themselves naturally in front of the camera.

Marissa HB Photography tip: Sometimes I’ll play Simon says with kids between the ages of 5-8, ask kids to tell jokes if they’re outgoing, I’ll ask little kids if they like tickles and it usually gets them smiling, or anything fun that they want to do! Piggy back rides, twirling, etc. creativity is key!

Preserving and Sharing Your Authentic Family Portraits

To preserve your authentic family portraits, store them in acid-free photo albums or frames to prevent damage. Consider making digital backups of your photos for safekeeping. Share your family portraits by creating photo books, uploading them to social media, or printing them as gifts for family members. Ensure your authentic family photos are enjoyed by future generations by keeping them safe and sharing them with loved ones.

Marissa HB Photography tip: I provide all clients with info on their images and a print release so they may print wherever they wish. Although they also do have access to a pro lab where they can print high quality images that match what they see on their computer monitor.
