Best Oahu Resorts for Families: A Local Photographer’s Honest Guide

Planning a family trip to Oahu and not sure where to stay? As a Native Hawaiian family photographer who’s spent over nine years photographing families at resorts all across this island — and stayed at most of them with my own kids — I’ve seen firsthand which ones work best for families. Here’s my honest take on the top family resorts on Oahu, plus a local tip on how to plan your stay to get the very best out of your trip.

My #1 Planning Tip: Split Your Stay

Before we get into the resorts, here’s the single best piece of advice I give every family: split your stay.

Start in Waikiki or Kahala for the first part of your trip. You’ll have the easiest access to activities, restaurants, and the island’s most beautiful sunrise spots — all just a short drive away in the early morning, before the crowds and traffic. Then move to a more secluded resort like Ko’Olina or Turtle Bay for the second half — a slower pace for sleeping in, lounging by the pool, and simply relaxing. Adventure first, deep relaxation second.

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa (Ko’Olina)

If your kids love Disney, Aulani is pure magic — the most feature-packed family resort on the island. Aunty’s Beach House (the kids’ club, for potty-trained kids ages 4–12) keeps little ones happy with mostly complimentary activities included in your nightly rate, and at Painted Sky: HI Style Studio, kids ages 3–12 can get an island-style makeover with hair, an outfit, and accessories. There’s a lazy river, amazing waterslides, and splash zones for big kids and littles alike. Don’t miss Rainbow Reef — their private saltwater snorkeling lagoon, the only one on Oahu. The spa is incredible, with an outdoor hydrotherapy garden included with any full-service treatment, and there’s a beachside stand with pineapple and watermelon soft serve, frozen chocolate bananas, and boba.

A couple of honest notes: you can see the Disney characters and get photos with them even if you’re not staying at the resort, so it’s worth a visit either way. And Aulani is the most crowded of the Ko’Olina resorts, so book your activities early.

Marriott Ko’Olina Beach Club

The Marriott is my pick for a fantastic all-around family resort. Same gorgeous Ko’Olina lagoon setting as Aulani, but noticeably calmer and more spacious. There’s a big, beautiful pool area and a sand-bottom pool with games the kids will love. The rooms come with a washer/dryer and fridge — a true lifesaver when you’re traveling with a family — and the condo-style comfort works well for longer stays. It’s about a 15-minute walk to Aulani, which is handy if you’re doing photos at the cove nearby or want to pop over for a character meal. If you want the Ko’Olina location without the Disney-level crowds, this is the easy, practical choice.

Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko’Olina

For families who want a more refined, elevated experience, the Four Seasons delivers polished service, a beautiful setting, and exceptional dining — while sharing the same calm Ko’Olina lagoon as its neighbors. There’s a dedicated keiki pool plus a serene adults-only infinity pool, and a complimentary kids’ program for ages 5–12 (Camp Kohola) with crafts, outdoor sports, swimming, tennis, and basketball. You’ll also find a welcoming kids’ club, seasonal extras like keiki glamping nights, family pool cabanas, and complimentary snorkel gear and paddleboards right on the beach.

One honest note: the Four Seasons leans elegant rather than action-packed — it doesn’t have the big waterslides of Aulani next door. It shines for families with younger kids, or anyone who values refined service and calm over thrills.

Turtle Bay Resort (North Shore)

If you want to experience the country side of Oahu — the North Shore and East side — Turtle Bay is a stunning, relaxing escape away from it all. My kids love this resort. Every room has an ocean view, and the villas are amazing. There’s a kid pool with two small slides (perfect for all ages, even littles), a big shallow pool with gradual steps and lounge chairs right in the water, a hidden jacuzzi with ocean views of the surfers, and a separate adult pool and jacuzzi. The breakfast buffet is wonderful, and there are activities you can sign up for in advance. For dinner, Lei Lei’s is amazing — catch a resort golf cart and they’ll drive you right over (be sure to tip your driver!). It’s about an hour from the airport, so you’ll want a rental car to make the most of the area.

The Kahala Hotel & Resort

The Kahala is a hidden gem just minutes from Waikiki, yet it feels worlds away from the hustle. Tucked into the upscale Kahala neighborhood, it’s peaceful and private, with a lovely small, calm beach right out front and beautiful sunrises on this side of the island. There are a few pools and a jacuzzi, plus the famous Dolphin Quest lagoon experience. It’s not an over-the-top pool complex — it’s more of a quiet, peaceful retreat — and because it’s still in Honolulu, you can reach tours, hikes, and the East side with ease.

Fun fact for Disney fans: the Kahala stood in for the fictional resort in the 2025 live-action Lilo & Stitch film — so if your family loved the movie, staying here is a special treat. You’ll want a rental car, but you’re still close enough to drive into town anytime.

The Best Time for Family Photos at Any of These Resorts

No matter where you stay, every one of these resorts is available for a sunrise photo session — and sunrise is hands-down the best time of day for family photos on Oahu. The light is soft and flattering, the beaches are quiet, and it’s cooler and calmer for the kids.

Here’s a local secret: if you’re traveling from the mainland, the time difference works in your favor. Hawaii is 3+ hours behind the rest of the U.S., so you’ll naturally be waking up early during the first few days of your trip.
