Best Things to Do Early Morning on Oahu with Kids
I’ve you’re looking for things to do early in the morning on O’ahu with kids (or not) you’re in the right place! Hawaii in the early morning is truly magical. The air is cool, the beaches are quiet, and the island feels like it belongs just to you. If you’re visiting from the mainland, jet lag actually works in your favor — you’ll likely be wide awake anyway! Whether you’re wrapping up a sunrise photo session or simply making the most of those early hours, here are some of my favorite morning activities on Oahu with kids.

1. Watch the sunrise from the Lanikai Pillbox Trail
The Lanikai Pillbox Trail — also known as Kaiwa Ridge — is one of the best sunrise spots on the island. The trail is short at 1.5 miles round trip, but it is steep at the beginning. It works best for kids who are steady on their feet. Toddlers may find it too challenging, but nothing a hiking backpack or baby carrier won’t fix! It will be dark if you are walking up before sunrise, so keep that in mind if you are bringing littles with you.
Start hiking about 30 minutes before sunrise. That way, you’ll reach the top in time for the full show. From the pillboxes, you’ll see Lanikai Beach and the Mokulua Islands — the two tiny islands locals call “the Mokes” — with the sun rising directly over the ocean. It’s breathtaking every single time. If you’re bringing little ones with you, you can also hike up just after sunrise – it will still be pretty and it won’t be as hot as a mid-day hike.
KEY tips before you go:
- Bring a flashlight — the trail is dark early on
- Arrive early to secure parking in the residential neighborhood
- Wear sunscreen even in the morning
2. Grab breakfast at Moke’s Bread & Breakfast in Kailua
After a hike or a sunrise session on the windward side, Moke’s in Kailua is the perfect reward. This beloved local spot is known for its lilikoi (passion fruit) pancakes, made from the family grandmother’s original recipe. Their homemade corned beef hash, Loco Moco, and fresh-baked bread are also worth the trip.
Moke’s opens at 7:30am Tuesday through Friday, and 7am on weekends. To avoid a wait, arrive before 9am. Note that Moke’s is closed on Mondays.

3. Swim at the beach before anyone else arrives
This is honestly one of my favorite things about early mornings in Hawaii. In the early hours — especially on weekdays — you can find stretches of Lanikai Beach, Kailua Beach, or the Ko’olina lagoons with just a handful of other people around.
The water is calm and the kids can run freely. You’ll get to experience the beach in a way that simply isn’t possible later in the day. This is especially wonderful right after a sunrise session, when everyone is already there and the kids are still full of energy.
4. Watch the sunrise from Turtle Bay
If you’re staying on the North Shore or planning a day trip, the beach at Turtle Bay Resort is a stunning place to watch the sun come up. The North Shore has a quieter, more rugged feel than Waikiki. In the early morning, it’s incredibly peaceful.
Grab a coffee, find a spot on the sand, and simply watch. It’s one of those moments you’ll talk about long after you get home.
5. Spot sea turtles in the morning
Sea turtles — known locally as honu — are commonly spotted on Oahu’s beaches. Early morning is one of the best times to find them, since they often come up on the sand to rest before the crowds arrive.
Laniakea Beach on the North Shore, also called Turtle Beach, is the most well-known spot. However, turtles can turn up at quieter coves all across the island. Always keep a respectful distance — it’s required by law. Even so, watching a sea turtle up close is something kids never forget.
6. Hike Diamond Head at sunrise
Diamond Head is one of Oahu’s most iconic landmarks. Early morning is hands down the best time to visit. The hike is about 1.8 miles round trip and includes some steep stairs and a tunnel — kids generally love it. At the summit, the panoramic views of Waikiki and the Pacific Ocean make every step worth it.
A few important logistics:
- Reservations are required for non-residents
- Book up to 30 days in advance at gostateparks.hawaii.gov
- Early morning slots (from 6am) go fast — book as soon as your dates are confirmed
- Parking is $10; entry is $5 per person (kids under 3 are free)
7. Walk Lanikai Beach before the crowds
Lanikai Beach consistently ranks as one of the most beautiful beaches in the United States. In the early morning, it’s absolutely dreamy. The turquoise water, soft white sand, and views of the Mokulua Islands make for a perfect slow morning walk.
Grab a coffee from a nearby café and just wander. It’s the kind of simple morning that ends up being a highlight of the whole trip.
The best part? Your whole day is still ahead of you
By 8 or 9am, you’ve already experienced some of the most beautiful moments Oahu has to offer. And the rest of the day is completely yours — no rushing, no heat, and far fewer crowds.
If you’re planning a sunrise family photo session during your trip, these activities are a wonderful way to make the most of that early morning energy. Read more about why I recommend sunrise over sunset for family beach photos on Oahu here.
